[drumming diary] Reorientation

We're still hunkering down with Lindsie in preparation for this demo. One night in, we had reworked "Trust" and "Mouse" with Chuck and Rob, and the general feeling is that we're happy with where they're going with the songs. Of course, I did have one minor skirmish about "Mouse," but that was ultimately educating them about why the song was the way it was, because their changes were messing with some of those reasons, so to change one thing and not the next didn't make much sense. Ultimately, we all got on the same page, and the song sounds fine.

Having this outside perspective is interesting. The next song we tackled was "Do You Want Me," after deciding that "Life Brings" would be too hard to make demo-ready. And this got into some interesting revelations. One was the suggestion that I abandon the rhythmic figure I'm playing most of the way throughout. Lindsie has always had a certain syncopation to her guitar part, and because of the repetition of that particular phrase, it seemed like a good idea to echo it. Now, however, we've excised a fair amount of fat that included that figure, so it's not a big deal to let it go. See, I can take direction from guitar players sometimes. There's still a little bit of a sense of fixing something that isn't broken in some parts, but we'll revisit that on Sunday.

From a procedural standpoint, we may be recording drums in my friend Steve's basement, which could be fun. Even if we don't, it get's Steve on Chuck and Rob's radar as a possible place to record drums in the future, so everybody wins.
