It's been an interesting week, in terms of figuring out where the hell I go from here. All the elements were there, including one crazy new idea. In chronological order, there was a quick trip to Boston to call play-by-play for the Fire's Game 3 loss to the New England Revolution. I didn't feel that great about my performance, but a lot of that is because the newness of the experience is wearing off, so I'm noticing things about how I'm doing. No definitive word on whether or not I'll do more radio next year, but the opportunity is clearly there.
Second, a real job interview, except it was out in Schaumburg, and would be a bit of a pay cut from my last gig. However, it would still be in the online world, and I would get to learn SQL and Oracle, which would help my marketability down the road. And given the market and my lower operating costs (cheaper rent and no car payments anymore), it might not be a bad thing.
Next up, and this is the odd one, I read a story in the Chicago Tribune about how they're going to announce a new weekly paper aimed at 18-34 year olds. So, given that I'm "publishing" a couple of regular columns on this site, I e-mailed the editor of the paper, inviting him to take a gander at what I've been writing here in case it has that hipster credibility that they'll obviously need for this endeavor. Personally, I would love to be a Gen X (do people still care about Gen X?) Mike Royko, although I'm nowhere NEAR that good of a writer yet. Hey, you never know. As it stands, the local music newsletter has already gotten me an in with a local free paper.
Finally, I've got a gig tonight, albeit non-paying, with Nitrous Foxide. This will be the first public appearance since I joined the band, and will hopefully give us a bit of momentum so we can ramp up the booking schedule. I've put out feelers for a new home for Clusterfunk, which I'll try to resurrect if the music career seems like its moving. Or, if I can land Sunday nights, I might just go ahead and do it anyway.
