So yesterday I sorta forgot to eat. I have friends who do that, and I generally don't understand it, but while I started the day off with a bowl of cereal and coffee, the rest of my day consisted solely of a bowl of ramen noodles (sidebar: hey! I'm getting ready for being broke!). After which I played soccer and went to open mike at Vaughan's and knocked back a few. By the time we, the house band, took the stage to finish off the night, I had a splitting sinus headache and a nominal level of nausea. I should have just left, seeing as how I don't get paid or anything, but that misguided sense of loyalty kicked in and I stuck it out. Grabbed a quesadilla on the way home that somehow triggered some allergies, as the five minutes from the taqueria to my apartment was all it took to fully stuff up my nose. Even more than my normal mild allergies to the ingredients in some beers. But then I slept like an absolute rock, so that's something.
The soccer game itself was our last of this session, and like every other game, we lost. However, everyone on the squad recognizes that we improved a hell of a lot over the last couple of months. Outdoor is going to kick butt. I nabbed an assist on one of the goals, and had a couple other chances and a couple other good feeds as well. Most of the team made it up to Vaughan's afterwards, and I let them choose the songs in what wound up being an extended Coz set. They're good about that if you have a lot of friends. For the most part, I did alright, but I realized halfway through it that I hadn't worked through the transposed chords for U2's "Beautiful Day," which I've started singing down a whole step so as not to suck. Then Doug threw Sugar's "Hoover Dam" out at me, which I realized I hadn't played in a long while, and didn't have charted out in the big book of songs I can't remember. The beauty of it was that it still sorta worked, which is a good sign that I've got the hang of this.
I'm still being a chickenshit about finding a venue that will pay me to sing, though. That needs to change, especially in light of the lack of prospects on the broadcasting front. I may be able to count on another 3 to 5 games as radio play-by-play this year, but anything more would be a stretch. Which, in the normal scheme of things, is fine, as I'm still getting the hang of this. However, the impending cash crunch had me hoping that would come through for a bit more money.
Also on that front, the voiceover class keeps skipping along. We had a guest "lecturer" this week, who just happened to be one of the voices you always here doing movie and TV promos. You know the one. Really deep, imposing voice on sci-fi and action movies, in particular. My emerging plan is to find out who his agent is. My friend Meredith has already hooked up with one as well, so there are some options developing. Now if they just pan out before I, you know, run out of money.
