I wrote a quick entry the other day about the incident at the White Sox game, but had to delete it when I realized I got some key points wrong. The thing that still puzzles me is, what is it about the Kansas City Royals that brings out the worst in a certain element of Sox fandom? Last year, a drunken fan (and his son) rushed a Royals coach during a late-season game. This time, there was a parade of three similarly intoxicated folk before another guy got the bright idea to tackle an umpire. It's not like this was the first game at the former Comiskey Park, although you might make the case that it was the first really warm day for a game, for whatever that's worth.
So, is it KC? All that midwest energy reinforcing the trailer trash that often characterized Middle America? Or is there some sort of simmering rivalry that turns ordinary drunks into field-jumping berserkers? It's odd, because if there's some sort of pattern emerging, the fan got it wrong by going after an umpire instead of a coach. And wasn't this the second game of the series, anyway? It boggles the mind.
In other news, I've gotten up before 8am twice in the last six days. This is somehow disturbing. I can barely remember when I'd have to be up every morning at 7:00 or so.
Sox fans have had a reputation for mindless violence ever since Steve Dahl's Disco Inferno fiasco back in the 70s. I think it just happens to be that in this time of uncertainty and upheaval they are choosing to honor their heritage.
It could also be that the south side fans don't have a neighborhood like Wrigleyville surrounding the park to deface, defile and urinate on and so, lacking that vital social outlet, are forced to indulge their need for public idiocy in the only other way available to them.
Or maybe it's a stand against the concept of monarchy?
Or it's just too damn much warm, flat Old Style?
