Hopefully, this will be the first in a series, because I like to be right.
Anyway, it's appropriate for today, because earlier in the afternoon, I was talking to my dad on the phone, what with it being Father's Day and all. We came around to the good fortune of the sports teams in the swamp that is East Rutherford, NJ. Particularly, the New Jersey Nets. My comments were that Kerry Kittles needed to step up, that Lucious Harris needed to the get the hell off the basketball court, and that the Nets weren't going to be able to win Game 6.
Being right on the first of those almost meant being wrong on the last one. Kittles looked strong, and helped his team hang on to a lead through three quarters. But then the Nets' half-court futility came into play, which was exemplified by the aforementioned Mr. Harris with a pair of missed free throws during a 19-0 Spurs run in the fourth quarter. Even coming down to the wire, down seven points, New Jersey was able to make three defensive stops in a row, but kept forcing up terrible shot after terrible shot. That's clearly the big difference this year for the Nets. Last season, they would move the ball around quickly until they got something worthwhile. This year, they're consistently too quick to pull the trigger, and I'm not entirely sure why. Now the Spurs are champs, which isn't so bad when you consider the role Steve Kerr played in Game 5. Bulls fans have to find solace where they can in the post-Jordan, pre-Paxson era.
In other sports news, I picked the wrong week to dump Colorado Rapids forward John Spencer from my fantasy soccer team. Spenny came through with a goal and an assist in a 4-1 drubbing of the Revolution, although the guy I replaced him with, New England's Wolde Harris, picked up the one.
