Rockin' the Suburbs

NP: Ben Harper, Diamonds on the Inside (CD)

I had no idea there even was a suburb called Merango, about 60 miles northwest of the city. Now I do. I had a drumming audition way the hell out there last night, for a latin pop/hip-hop project that the brother of the girlfriend of a good friend of mine is involved in. In the the process of getting out there, I learned where Elgin, Streamwood and Hoffman Estates are. In the process of getting back, I felt like I was in Radiohead's "Karma Police" video, sans the guy running in front of the car and Thom Yorke in the back. As fate would have it, I had OK Computer with me, so it was only natural to cue that up.

This was after finding myself in Deerfield on Sunday night, which included a little detour into Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. I don't know if learning my was around the 'burbs is a function of getting old, of having a car for six years now, or just pure chance, but there you have it.

So far, three rejections from voiceover agencies, and one audition out of the dozen demos I sent out. The latter pretty much negates the former, so now I'll just have to figure out how to sound not unlike George Clooney by Monday.

And finally, I understand their need to get the message out, but I must have gotten ten e-mails from Comcast yesterday telling me I had to switch my e-mail settings. I guess I could have used their "transition wizard" and maybe that would let them know that I had switched, but seeing as how my AT&T address isn't the one I use regularly, that just would have been ugly.

One out of twelve is an 8% return, Chris. With eight yet to be determined, you're ahead of the game!

You do not sound like George Clooney. Who told you that?!

It's not that they think I naturally sound like Clooney. They want someone who *can* sound like him, and based on my demo, they thought I might be that guy.

I wouldn't call Merango a suburb per se; It's just a
town in Northeast Illinois. It always holds a soft spot for me, however, since we drove through it (and in fact did twice this last week) on the way to Lake Geneva as a kid. We used to stop at the Yum Yum Burger joint right on the main drag in Merango. Alas, it's no longer there.

But I digress. Or rather, this whole comment is a digression, but I digress.
