NP: Modern Rock 1980-81 (CD)
Yeah, I'm feeling downright prolific today. Or too lazy to get out of my computer chair for now. For those of you on the non-LiveJournal version, this might inspire me to fix the "multiple posts per day" navigation, but don't hold your breath.
Anyway, there's something I didn't dwell on too much in the initial schadenfreude moment that followed the news of MP3.com's likely demise. That's my decision not to work for them. In the grand scheme of things, I don't know that I'd be any better off had I headed out to San Diego last year. On the one hand, I would have had over a year's worth of steady income, but it's impossible to say whether or not I would have saved enough of it to make a difference, especially when you factor in the cost of moving back here at the end of it all (the relocation out West wouldn't have cost me anything). Yeah, there's a chance I would have stayed to find another job in San Diego, especially with my brother and his business contacts out there, but the safe money in this entirely hypothetical scenario would be on Chicago.
Sacrificing my old apartment wouldn't have been an issue, as it's gone condo anyway. My living costs upon returning probably would have been higher, since the roommate option would have probably passed me by. So, anyway, I feel both valdidation and vindication that I made the right choice.
Then there are the other factors. Last night, a Monday in Chicago, I went to see a couple of friends (Larry Schroeder, Newt Cole) play at Elbo Room. There were easily more than a dozen friends and acquaintences there. More like twenty. On a Monday, and not because of any cajoling on my part. The fact that I can drop in to see a show on a Monday and bump into so many people that I know is a bit part of the reason Chicago is really, truly, my home now.
