NP: Jane's Addiction, Strays (CD)

So it would seem that forces of nature were determined to keep me away from the A Perfect Circle show last Sunday. After talking to Lindsie last night, it seems that the phone number I had for my friend Alan wasn't right, so if he was able to get tickets, I never found out about it. And Lindsie actually had two tickets, but didn't know I wanted to see them. Dammit.

The reason for talking to Lindsie last night, though, was the first unveiling of the five-song EP. It sounds HUGE. And a bit more like Liz Phair than I might have guessed, at least at times. I'm now curious to hear more of Phair's most recent record to see if the comparison holds up.

After that, it was off to Moxie for that open mike again, which was pleasantly devoid of the one annoying drunk guy who always shows up, although we did have a drunken Irish guy who was flitting about like a whirling dervish. Ben called him a "mini-Colin Farrell," which seemed pretty apt. Matt Hoffer, who is playing with Mitch in Soulfix, was there, so that was fun, and the three of us combined for some amusing covers here and there. One of the owners talked to Matt about playing there weekends, which made me feel slightly weird about pushing the topic with him as well, which I've been trying to do for about two months now. We'll see.

I feel like I say this every week, but several opportunities are dancing on the hopefully immediate horizon. I had a full-time job lead land in my inbox yesterday, and next week will hopefully open a new pipeline for contract/freelance research work, which goes a long way to keeping me both solvent and active in music, voiceover, and whatever else I can come up with.

Finally, the Washington Post reported earlier in the week that the much-maligned Gigli played to an average of three people per showing last weekend. That's right, three people. What could have stopped this disaster? Maybe Saddam's weapons of mass destruction, which the Weekly World News reports were actually killer dinosaurs a la Jurassic Park.
