NP: The New Pornographers, Electric Version (MP3)
I'm learning that, if I want to make incisive political commentary in this space more consistently, one way to do that is to watch the Sunday morning news shows. I flipped over to This Week on ABC while waiting for the U-17 soccer match between the U.S. and Brazil to start, and caught Paul Bremer basically owning up to having little or no communication with the Iraqi Governing Council. At the very least, he felt that arguing with him through third parties was a good idea. This does not bode well for anything, does it?
Then there was the judge's decision to throw out Fox News' lawsuit against Al Franken, a ruling that was, dare I say it, fair and balanced. What I didn't get is why Fox's lawyers invoked "Weird" Al Yankovic in their comments, saying that they would fight similar efforts whether coming from Al Franken, Al Davis of the Munsters, or Mr. Yankovic. And yet, the crux of their argument was that Franken's use of the phrase "fair and balanced" was NOT, in fact, parody. So why mention the undisputed heavyweight champion of musical parody in your own defense? I guess it's not surprising they lost.
Yesterday was one of those days where I had maybe fifteen minutes of free time between various appointment and engagements, but I made it through mostly unscathed. Only after the fact did I remember that one of those appointments was an hour and a half of playing soccer in the hot sun, and subsequently slept hard until one of my roommate's various alarm clocks went off very loudly this morning while she was in the shower.
Radiohead was amazing on Saturday, so a shoutout to KL is in order. Thanks again for the ticket.
Sunday morning shows: Meet the Press is my favorite, but then I have a bit of a crush on Tim Russert.
Al Franken: WTF was Bill O'Reilly thinking when he called Franken a "political writer"? He wasn't thinking, was he? Sheesh.
And just to be annoying:
