NP: Ben Harper, Diamonds on the Inside (CD)
Because I know there's nothing as remotely interesting as my sleeping patterns, I was out like a light last night. And, by "last night," I mean "this morning." As I ended up missing most of the actual AM hours, I didn't realize I was that tired. Could be that I subconsciously knew what my schedule today was. Or wasn't. Could be the cloudiness and impending snow. Of course, could have been those last two beers and shot of Southern Comfort before I left Martyr's last night.
Speaking of which, I almost created one of those hypothetical awkward situations I'm so good at. There was this guy whose record I played drums on about three or four years ago sitting in with Tributosaurus as they took on the Elvis Costello songbook (which he writes every day). Anyway, he must have walked by me about eight times without even a flicker of recognition, which, in the absence of other stimuli, seemed almost as if he was deliberately ignoring me. It wasn't getting to me, or anything, but it was odd, and seeing as how I was at the show by myself, with only the music itself to divert my attention, I dreamed up worst-case scenarios, as I'm often prone to do. Then again, he hadn't seen me in quite some time, so maybe he just didn't recognize me.
This was, ultimately, the case, as I finally tapped him on the shoulder as I was getting ready to leave, and the enthusiastic catching-up and buying of drinks ensued. Then we started talking with these other two guys, and one of them bought another round. Really, I was trying to be good and leave and not continue my dark path towards universal drunkenness (which is a gross overstatement if you're reading this, Mom). It just didn't work out that way.
The other upshot of the evening was the open door from the band's drummer to sit in at some future date. In retrospect, Chris Costello playing Elvis Costello would have been appropriate, but my last month has been a little too chaotic to have made the right inquiries at the right times.
Speaking of that, the last couple days, in particular, have been characterized by actually getting things done. A couple of bands are getting off the ground, jobs have sought, insurance companies contacted, police reports updated, zero-percent balance transfer credit cards applied to. We're at that point of the cycle where the light of several opportunities seem to be visible on the horizon. They seem to be bouncing, in that they will dip below it and I can't see them every once in a while, when it gets dark, but they always seem to come back.
