NP: Warren Zevon, The Wind (CD)
[editor's note -- still no NYE word, but I'll know for sure this afternoon, and won't be upset if you've already made plans]
I swear to God, there's a question on the Ohio driver's test that reads something like the following:
Complete the following statement. On a three-lane highway, the slow lane is...
- the left lane.
- the center lane.
- the right lane.
And the correct answer somehow is "b." I don't get it. At first it was just the driving 64 mph in the fast lane, which, literally, was first encountered within 10 minutes of crossing the state line in both directions, but I realized that wasn't the whole deal. Do stupid drivers all move there en masse, or is it something in the air that makes them drive like that? I know there are a couple current and former Ohioans reading this, so could you shed some light here?
Anyway, made great time through Pennsylvania, and good time through the aforementioned land of silly drivers, which allowed me to match my twelve hours and change from the outbound trip in spite of the rain in Indiana. Obviously, when you do the math of 800 miles in 12 hours, the point of the exercise is to not get a speeding ticket. Some people would take the easy way out and just not speed, but it's more of a challenge to speed and just not get caught.
In addition to which, going faster, entirely aside from being a lot more fun, means less time spent in some of the most boring scenery on earth (most of Ohio and all of Indiana on 80/90 - the only thing worse is Iowa and Nebraska. Or maybe Illinois and Iowa. Oh, hell, the whole road just pretty much blows), and therefore slightly reduced risk of falling dead asleep at the wheel. I've done this drive. You're a better man than I, is all I can say. Then again, I'm not a man, so that's not really saying much. You get the idea.
They were purposely inconveniencing you, Chris: they could tell you're originally from Jersey.
