NP: CMJ New Music Monthly - Volume 114- July 2003 (CD)
I seem to be dropping back into a little time warp this week. Had lunch with an old friend on Tuesday, drinks with another last night, and felt really good about reconnecting with people I always got along well with, but just sort of drifted away from. In the global sense, this feeds into this emerging switch from trees to forest that could get more pronounced in the next week or two.
Then one of my best friends growing up called me out of the blue on Tuesday night. I swear, Cal is the happiest person I know, and it makes me happy for him as a result. Don't know if it made me noticeably happier in the abstract, as the whole possibly imminent job thing (and I think the current wait is perhaps snail-mail related) has me more positive than I've been in at least six months. But it's awfully nice to not be sure what has me upbeat, as it's been the same sort of thing in the other direction for a while. I think I'm starting to be at least somewhat fun to be around again.
And I actually posted something over on alt.tv.x-files today, but that's Hank's fault. It's almost unfathomable to me that people still actively talk about that show. Eh, maybe it'll drive a bit of traffic over here, which is always good for no particular reason other than self-satisfaction. I checked the numbers today, and I'm up over 10,000 page views a month, although I don't have any filters in place to elimnate my own updates and my checking for comments and whatnot. Still, the growth is very steady, and the overall trend should control for those.
Sometime last night, in part because it came up on the CD of songs I sing at open mike and on solo gigs that was in the car stereo, it dawned on me that there are an awful lot of songs dedicated to the brazenly short-term, but the one that suddenly stands out is "Desperate But Not Serious" from Adam Ant. "If I ask you difficult questions / If I make improper suggestions / Would you find that a risk to your health / Would you put me up on the bookshelf / With the books and the plants?" I'm not that guy, but every once in a while, I wonder if I could be that guy. Or if I'd want to.
And, because I know you want to know, both new cover bands now have names. The Britpop band will be henceforth known as Diver, and the new Rhythm Section of Doom effort is The Honor Thieves, whose first show is February 6th, as per the updated calendar. There are some other updates over in the Music pages, but I'll let you find those on your own. Now I've got to chart out some tunes for one, and download (legally, mind you) some for the other.
