NP: Oasis, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (MP3)
That's right, I LookSmart. At least that's what some middle-aged woman halfway down the bar at Blue Bayou told me last night. Actually, she asked me if I was smart, then, when I said yes ("Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say yes"), she asked if I was a librarian. Not sure what to make of that part, but I told her that, actually, I'm a drummer, so go figure. Then she stopped talking to me. I didn't think I was being a jerk, but the exchange was already surreal enough that I suppose I shouldn't take it personally.
As of today, I'm more than a drummer, though. The fixed, recurring parts of my life now include the Sandwich Music King gigs, plus as many as twenty hours of part-time market research work. Add the variable number of bar (and maybe coffeeshop) gigs to that -- both drumming and singing -- and the possibility of significant broadcast work with the Fire, and Plan B might be a sustainable reality. The latter two parts, with those pesky "variable" and "possibility" qualifiers, have the sobering effect of calling the whole deal into question, but for the month or two it will take to see how those play out, I will have at least slowed the cash burn rate. And it will make the next move much clearer, I would think. I would hope.
The whole thing just has be a bit disoriented at the moment. A routine may very well emerge, but it's certainly not there yet, so I feel like I'm being pulled eight different ways at once. And, duh, I am. In theory, "easing" back into the workaday world via a part-time gig was supposed to take the sting out of it. Except that's only one piece of the puzzle, and I don't even know what the finished puzzle is supposed to look like, and that's never easy.
May you live in interesting times, indeed. At least I'm prepared for this with hair somewhat reminiscent of Wolverine. Or the guy from A Flock of Seagulls. I'm not exactly sure how that happened, but that's how it looks right now.
