The Lighter Side of 9/11

NP: Dallas Burn vs. D.C. United (TiVo)

I'm going to go for a little something different here than I'd imagine the rest of the online and offline media are running.

Some of you know that I was supposed to fly into Newark three years ago today, and I won't rehash the big emotional component of my particular story. But once all air traffic was shut down, I made the quick judgement that no terrorist in his (or her) right mind would ever target Midway Airport, so I figured I'd wait things out in the terminal.

A lot of people, obviously, had either the same idea, didn't have any better idea, or just wanted to be close to the closest television to see what was going on.

Which was in the airport bar.

Now, as Tom Hanks can attest, airports can involve a lot of waiting. Airport bars, as such, will occasionally crack down on loitering so as not to displace paying customers. What I found to be thoroughly amusing that morning was that, despite this brutal attack on our country, this unprecedented violence perpetrated against the United States, they still wouldn't let you actually sit on a stool at the bar to watch the TV unless you bought a drink.
