NP: Aimee Mann, I'm With Stupid
Last night was just weird. The early part of the evening was marked by a near-interminable plumbing adventure that precluded some much needed doing of the laundry. I'm assuming the kitchen sink now drains normally, but I skipped out as soon as my roommate was home to continue babysitting the process. If that process had a theme song, it would definitely be Frank Zappa's "Let's Make The Water Turn Black." Sheesh. Lots going on deep in the pipes that I don't want to know about.
So I felt like I was running late for Vaughan's, but ended up beating Tony there. With Margaret off of Tuesdays and Monica out this week, it almost felt like I stepped into a different bar. I quickly stepped out and got dinner, since a plumber, and landlord and no running water in the kitchen is not conducive to cooking.
Seemed like a good crowd, although we had one guy walk in with a guitar slung on his back right when we started, watch a song and a half, and then pretty much storm out. Not up to his exacting standards, I guess. One guy who debuted last week left before his spot came up on the list, which I suppose I could blame on somebody if I wanted to. The odd part of the evening, consistent with the whole time dilation theory, was the mass exodus by about 11:30. Everybody just up and left, and I mean everybody. Ultimately it was me and Tony on stage, Open Jam regulars Ed and Mike in the "crowd," and Andy behind the bar.
It was so desolate, I got in my car thinking it had to be some ungodly hour in the morning, but I still made it home at half past midnight. As of this writing, time seems to be behaving normally again.
Both "Catch Me Now I'm Falling" and "Wave of Mutilation" showed some potential, but I need to be more aggressive with contact lens rewetting drops. We're rushing headlong into the dry season, and it's making my lenses stick. Which, in turn, is making it really hard to read lyrics. Made for some interesting mush-mouthing, but I don't think Ray Davies will mind.
