What I Meant Was

NP: Queens of the Stone Age, Lullabies to Paralyze

So let me get this straight. Voinovich feels very strongly that Bolton shouldn't be confirmed, just not strongly enough to kill the nomination in committee?

Now I've been one to defend senators when they get pinned to the wall on alleged flip-flops on the premise that compromise is sort of the whole point of the Senate, but this is ridiculous. Everybody was lauding Voinovich for showing some backbone in committee, but he's looking more like the worst sort of politician with this sort of bullshit, trying to have it both ways.

To be fair, Voinovich's vote assured that it left the committee without a recommendation. Now, if he'd voted against Bolton outright, the vote would have been 9-9, and it still would have been sent out of committee for a full vote, also without recommendation. Therefore, it doesn't really matter how he voted. Voinovich believes that a president has the right to nominate who he wants, no matter what he Voinovich may personally feel about said nominee. Therefore he allowed the prez such discretion but at the same time made sure the committee did not give Bolton the official seal of approval.

It sort of bothers me, too, but I understand it and his behavior. Now, if a "no" vote from him in committee would have permantly ended the Bolton nomination then yes, his behavior would be stupid and unforgivable given his opinion on Bolton. But again, whether or not he voted "no", this nom was going to leave the committee and be voted upon by the full senate.
