The Coming Storm

NP: Live 8 London playlist

Yesterday's Today's Papers column had an interesting bit on the upcoming Supreme Court histrionics debate.

The WSJ plays catch-up on O'Connor's resignation and says the first step in the nomination process will be a fight within the conservative movement. While Evangelical Christians want someone very different from O'Connor, business leaders saw her as an ally and are also lobbying to get their opinions heard.

I'm becoming more and more interested in the internecine wars of the GOP over this nomination than I am the liberal/conservative, blue state/red state conflict. If Dubya has to choose between placating either the religious right or the business community, is there really a question about which way he'll go?

This is assuming, of course, that he can't find somebody that makes both constituencies happy. If he follows the money men, I'm starting to think it could tear the Republican Party in two, and this could be the absolute best thing to come out of the Bush White House. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big fan of breaking the two-party system, and I'm not partial to how it breaks. I'd love a new party that represents my own values, but I'll take three competitive parties of any stripe over my own preferences.
