Cleanliness Is An Illusion, Draw Your Own Conclusion About Godliness

NP: John Cage, 4'33"

I'm not sure why I feel compelled to post at three in the morning after a gig, but I guess I'm not quite ready to turn in, and the last 100 or so pages of Stephen King's Dark Tower saga are just boring the crap out of me. Plus, I keep getting anecdotal evidence of people actually reading this thing.

Anyway, today was an exercise in how to do things and how not to do things. The switchover to the new PC is complete, so the next phase was to basically reconstruct my office space. Everything was unplugged. Dust bunnies the size of tumbleweeds were dispersed. Things were moved into more sensible places. The desk is remarkably clean and uncluttered, but that's only because I dumped pretty much everything that wasn't part of the old computer rig into a box to be dealt with later. I've graduated from piles to boxes.

I still need to add the musical elements back in, including the new toys I picked up last week, but I'm particularly happy with how this has turned out so far. Don't know the future of the old machine, although setting it up for recording in the rehearsal space isn't the worst idea in the world, with a new second hard drive.

The toys didn't stop there, though, as I also got what has been pretty universally described in conversations as "the big-ass TV." With the amount of time devoted to the office revamp, though, and the fact that I was trying to avoid unplugging my TiVo, I opted for a much less elegant working method, picking up and moving large electronic devices while fully connected to other large electronic devices. Even with the spaghettified mess of cables, iit wasn't quite as expedient as I had hoped, and I only had about fifteen minutes to plug the damn thing in before I had to get to the Cubby Bear gig. That wasn't enough to fully comprehend the signal path. Tomorrow I may opt for disassemble/reassemble, but the piece are at least set up now.

We'll get into the philosophical side of blowing all this cash on gadgets later, as the truly odd thing about it is that I'm feeling nearly guilt-free about it all. Although I'm slightly concerned that I'm sharing so much about it, seeing as how some of you know where I live...

What, you win the lottery or something? Did you also get the firewire card for the mixer?

No, no lottery. I just decided that I could responsibly take on some debt, and that I wanted to fulfill some of my vision of the desktop studio. The TV was more of flat-out (little pun, there) gift to myself for, ironically enough, finally paying down my credit card debt from my "underemployment."

Or it's all an early mid-life crisis. Take your pick.

And hey, comments go through without requiring moderation!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who can't quite muddle through The Dark Tower-sesssess. I'm such a King fan, but I don't think they're his best work. I just don't get it. I mean, I like reading the tie-ins to other stories of his, but that's about where my enthusiasm peaks.

Well, I was totally hooked on the first three or four of them. Then he totally jumped the shark with it. And I think maybe he's deliberately trying to make readers lose interest before the likely less-than-thrilling conclusion.

Oh, and Hank, yeah, I got the Firewire card. Haven't actually installed SONAR on the new machine yet, though.
