Halloween In Chicago

NP: Nikka Costa, Everybody Got Their Something

While, on the one hand, Halloween is just one more chance for young adults to get shitfaced, and I'm not sure how much I really support that, the other hand has a bunch of good points, too.

Things I like about Halloween in Chicago:

  • A guy dressed as Gumby getting on the El during rush hour on Friday.
  • A bunch of people dressed as rush hour commuters on the El on Friday acting like standing next to a guy dressed up as Gumby is perfectly normal.
  • Switching trains at Belmont and trying to figure out who's going to a Halloween party and who just dresses like that normally.
  • Just riding the El on Halloween in general, particularly at 2 in the morning.
  • Random people commenting on your costume as you walk down the street. The extreme example of this for me was the sheer number of Chicagoans bursting into "Believe It Or Not" the year I dressed as The Greatest American Hero.

I saw a couple dressed as the White Stripes this year, which was pretty good, albeit pretty easy to pull off. Wolverine didn't get me any prizes -- first prize at HOB went to a sheep shagger, and yes, you read that right -- but I thought it went over well. No pictures yet. I would also like to declare a moratorium on the Clockwork Orange droog costume of the white jumpsuit with black bowler hat. It's overdone.

Tonight I'll be checking out the Northhalsted parade, which should be, um, interesting.
