Bad Targeting

NP: John Cage, 4'33"

I was going to post a while ago when I got one of these e-mails, but as I've said before, a single data point never quite tips the scales to action.

I've been to, I think, two shows at the Rosemont Theatre. Also, I use ticketmaster.com a lot. Somewhere in this combination, I got on a list. Now, the Rosemont Theatre does a fair amount of shows, but the two I've received e-mail promotions for have been Gallagher and Martina McBride.

As a professional data wrangler, I'm somewhat puzzled at how even collaborative filtering -- let along data mining -- of my concertgoing profile could ever yield those two results. The two shows I saw at that venue were King Crimson and David Bowie. While the thought of Robert Fripp and Gallagher shooting the shit backstage is thoroughly amusing on a whole lot of levels, it's not exactly something that would ever happen in this reality.
