In Memoriam

NP: Ivory Wire, The World Is Flat

I had another goosebump moment this morning, after WXRT followed an old interview clip of John Lennon where he talked about not fearing death with "Imagine." There was a similar moment a few weeks ago, listening to Chris Whitley's "Say Goodbye" in the car the day I learned of his passing.

In honor of John Lennon, then, I give you lyrics from a friend's band:

Ivory Wire, "To The Very Marrow"

I was just ten when the news came in
I remember the day ...December 8
I was up in my room just listening.

Come right here, don’t delay, have a seat right away
There’s some tragic news...I can’t find the words to use
At the scene, on TV, Is it true? Can it be?
"There has been a crime, and the man who changed your life
Well today that man has died..."

And I fell to the floor in disbelief
I said to myself, How can it be?
And the shock of it all had crushed me

Where were they? What was seen? Who would do such a thing?
And I wondered why, as I watched the crowd arrive.....
Holding signs at his door "He will live forever more!"
But the bullets blazed.
As the tears ran down my face, I could hear the music play.

Years have passed, times have changed, but it still remains the same
Some things strike so deep as to effect the lives we keep
If he never came around tell me where would we be now???
After all these years....
It means more to me today. The songs still play.
