The Common Good

NP: Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders, Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders

While I still take the Daily Kos to task for trying to take credit for Barack Obama's senate victory -- which site creator Markos Moulitsas Zuniga was still claiming a few weeks ago on The Colbert Report -- I have to give him credit sometimes as well. While it's not his story, Markos shines light on an article by Michael Tomasky that speaks to something flitting around the political part of my mind almost as much as the prospects of a third party, and that's this notion of the "common good." For a while now, I've been meaning to get back to some of the books I had to read in college that touched on the origins of civil society and government, from Hobbes to Locke to Socrates, and this is the central tenet that I want to investigate further. To what end, I'm not entirely sure, but maybe there's a connection in there to be made.
