Speaking Truthiness To Power

NP: Gomez, How We Operate

Apologies for the already overused subject, but if you read any political or media blogs, the biggest story you'd almost never hear in another medium is about Stephen Colbert's appearance at the White House Correspondent's Dinner over the weekend. If you're on the right, he just wasn't funny, which certainly says something about the right's sense of humor. If you're on the left, it's some kind of media conspiracy and cover-up that Colbert's schtick wasn't given the attention it deserved, which also says something about the left.

I'm with Slate's Troy Patterson on this one, in that Colbert was doing his thing, and it's odd that anyone would be surprised by that. They hired a guy who does a blustery parody of a right-wing pundit, and they want deference? I'd be more concerned if he broke character. It's like every fandom that gets their panties in a bunch when their favorite actor or actress is on a talk show and the host doesn't bow down and kiss the actor's feet. What the hell were you expecting?

The big winner in all of this has to be Colbert, who couldn't buy this much press with all of Comedy Central's advertising budget.
