This is from William Gibson, as part of the New York Times' Sunday op-ed on where we stand five years after 9/11.

The fear induced by terrorism mirrors the irrational psychology that makes state lotteries an utterly reliable form of stupidity tax.

It's kind of a fascinating comparison, but that's why Gibson is a good writer.
