The Power Of The Narrative

NP: OK Go, Oh No

With so much of the media fully on board with this notion that the Democrats will almost certainly take back the House tommorow, and may win the Senate, part of me is curious to see what would happen if that somehow doesn't come to pass. Mostly because a greater swatch of the media seems a bit more skeptical than in the past, so things like voting irregularities might be taken more seriously if the news doesn't end up exactly like the talking heads have been saying it would.

(Speaking of that narrative, or at least the talking points related to it, Olbermann actually called DC-area curtain stores last week to ask if any Democrats have actually called about drapes. They hadn't.)

Of course, the rumored spine of the press corps might be overstated if noone actually challenged Tony Snow last week when he claimed he didn't understand Kerry's joke even if the word "us" -- which Kerry said he omitted -- was included. And it's an odd state of affairs when I only got that piece of information from Stephen Colbert. Last week Don Imus ragged on The Daily Show as putting an agenda over being funny, which Joe Scarborough then flipped into a big story on an alleged fake news backlash -- and I have to say, I don't really watch Scarborough often, but this is now the second time I've seen him do this exact same story, and even Imus seemed to be basing this on only one show -- but if the "real" news media is ignoring stuff like the White House press secretary talking to the press and the American people like they're drooling morons, can you blame people for getting their news from Comedy Central?
