Okay, so we've had a couple of days to process Super Bowl XLI now. Had I actually been paying attention to the media, I suspect I would figure they're being too hard on Rex Grossman and maybe not hard enough on the previously-ballyhooed Bears defense. Looking at overall time of possession is misleading -- the offense going three-and-out has just as much to do with that. But I don't think the defense had given up a seven-and-a-half minute drive all season. I know the broadcasters were wondering why we didn't blitz more, but in general, I thought the defense played not to lose instead of to win.
Going into the game, I figured we'd need to force two more turnovers than we gave up in order to win. Clearly that didn't happen. This team could have risen above just a bad game from Grossman, or even just a sub-par defensive performance. But not both.
Still, two games further than last year. Being new to this whole notion of following a football team, I'm taking the long view. Plus, Chicago Fire preseason starts today, so I've already moved on.
