The Core Issue

NP: John Cage, 4'33

I caught Senator Pat Leahy (D-VT) on Countdown last night before my power went out, and I think he nailed the overarching issue in the U.S. Attorney imbroglio, saying "I realize U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president, but the U.S. justice system does not serve at the pleasure of either this president or any other president." Precedence or not, it's well within Bush's purview to actually fire these people, but this runs deeper than just that.

That being said, the most loyal of the loyal Bushies once again dug their own hole with all the shifting rationales, despite the looming spectre (no, not Arlen) of the Libby trial, where it wasn't the outing of Valerie Wilson, but the lying. The reflexive lying of this White House is what is so continually astounding, and will ultimately bury them.
