NP: Ivory Wire, Notables & Nobodies
I've been meaning to transcribe this letter I received a couple of weeks ago. It's kind of bizarre. Looks handwritten on the outside, from someone in Providence, Rhode Island. It spells my street name wrong, and has "Please Foward" written on the bottom of the envelope. Text (mostly printed, with a handwritten note at the bottom) as follows.
Chris,Hello! I'm a long lost friend. Thanks to the internet, I've tracked you down. We haven't spoken since '94 (?). I've always thought you were one of the most interesting and intelligent people I've known. I hope you are well and I often wonder what's become of you.
I just moved back to RI. I drove past your old beach house- AH! To be young again.
Well it's me...Leslie [last name removed just in case it's legit]. Perhaps you will remember me. Perhaps you will be curious enough to write or call. IF YOU DON'T ---- I'll spread hot internet chain mail! I know that you - Chris Costello - were once (a great) Chess King employee.Don't make me do it -
Leslie(handwritten) Chris - I hope you are happy & healthy! Please drop me a line and let me know what you've been doing.
Now it's entirely possible that this is legit, and Leslie just has the wrong Chris Costello. Wouldn't be the first time. But the structure of it is just so weird -- wouldn't you say who you are first, instead of declaring "I'm a long lost friend"? -- that I'm somewhat suspicious.
That said, one of the sample searches that turns up on the results of Yahoo! People Search yields a hit on both the full name and Providence, RI. So maybe this is just mistaken identity, as I never had a beach house, nor did I work at Chess King. If that sounds like you, and you know a Leslie from Rhode Island, drop me a line and I'll hook you up with your long lost friend.
Maybe you should just forward it to Costello's Sandwiches and see what they make of it.
It does say 'please forward' on it, after all.
