Choose Your Metaphor

NP: John Cage, 4'33"

Over at Time's Swampland, Jay Carney describes Rudy Guiliani's primary strategy as being akin to "a football team whose playoff fate hinges on the wins and losses of other teams." The way things seem to be going lately, it seems to be more like try to hit a grand slam with no one on base, or slightly more charitably, relying too heavily on 3-pointers. I kind of like those two sports references better, as I'm a fan of manufacturing runs with singles and bunts in baseball, and of low post play and driving the lane in basketball.

So then would the logical extension be that the effect of the 24-hour news channels on politics is similar to the effect of Sportscenter on sports, in the pursuit of style over substance, highlights over fundamentals?
