NP: The Raveonettes, Lust Lust Lust
When we last left my high tech paperweight, I was trying to repair my Windows installation to little or no avail. At this point, it may or may not have anything to do with audio codecs, and some of the wrangling I did just completely wrecked everything to the point where even booting to safe mode wasn't possible.
(Yes, I know, buy a Mac. I'm getting close.)
Anyway, I finally was able to scan the hard drive in the Recovery Console, except that scan only completed because it returned a message that "your volume may have one or more unrecoverable problems." So, could all of this really just been a hard drive problem? If the bad sectors coincided with the audio drivers, maybe. I'm not convinced. Anyway, running my desktop's internal hard drive as an external drive on my laptop allowed the error-checking and defragmentation to actually work, so maybe, just maybe, it was a transient error that is now fixed.
But probably not. I'm mostly resigned to rebuilding the system from scratch, once I'm sure I've got everything I need backed up.
While a lot of it had to do with the glacial pace of weekend warrior diagnostics, I haven't had an entirely stable desktop computer for nearly a year now. That Mac is looking better and better. Then again, this has also demonstrated that my needs for something more powerful than a basic laptop might be overstated, especially since I've mostly given up on songwriting and home recording.
Whee.
