NP: Elbow, The Seldom Seen Kid
It may or may not surprise you to know that I keep a private journal. "Keep" may be a bit of an overstatement, as it's not a real regular thing, but sometimes it's useful for organizing my thoughts when I'm churning on, say, a big decision.
From January 17:
Waiting six months is clearly the prudent option. It lets me better assess my employment situation, and could knock my monthly payment down significantly.
Prudent doesn't necessarily mean right, it just means it would have been the less risky choice. And it wasn't just layoffs I was worried about, because the option to use my down payment savings as "Fuck You" money had crossed my mind more than once.
My point here being that I considered the option that something like this might happen, but I saw enough evidence to go ahead. I made as educated of a decision as I could, and it simply turned out to be the wrong decision. When a company is trying to maintain the appearance that nothing is wrong -- whether for the sake of morale or shareholder value -- it's hard to see something like this until it's too late. No second-guessing allowed.
As for the ensuing chaos, it will pass. If there's an upside to having to find a new place to live, it's that I will once again have new environs to explore with all my free time, much like I did the last time I found myself without full time employment, back in 2002. I've survived this sort of thing once already, which is part of why I'm not that worried about it. The other part is that I have to be focused on the accommodation situation, and can't afford to sit around and wallow in self-pity or anything. There will be time for that later.
