The Birther Nonsense
NP: Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel (Rainy Windshield)
Josh Marshall reluctantly weighs in on the birthers, pointing out that it's really just a proxy for what these people really think. What he doesn't go out and say is that these aren't conspiracy nuts -- which is how I've seen them described elsewhere -- as much as they're just flat-out racists. He goes on to ask what difference it makes where he was born, as long as his mother was a citizen, which is something I haven't seen discussed out loud very much.
And with Congress heading into a recess, there seems to be a growing notion that this will hurt the GOP on health care in much the same way the Henry Louis Gates story knocked the White House off its health care message for much of the past week. It's going to be tough for congressmen to demonize wonky health care policy to their constituents when all their constituents want to talk about is crazy shit about who was born where.
