Reading Into It

NP: Tom Petty, Greatest Hits

Andrew Sullivan is getting back in touch with his Palin Derangement Syndrome, this time about the new release date for her book.

But why the rush? It couldn't be that she's trying to beat any other account of her bizarre career and surreal private life, could it?

As with a bunch of other Palin-related stories, I think the answer is much, much simpler, and once again about money. And if it takes a Sarah Palin book to spur some additional consumer spending on books through the holiday season, I think I can live with that.

In fact, I think it plays into a more compelling narrative for the GOP and the former governor, in that an expedient short-term decision has long-term effects that actually hurt them both. Think about it. Increased sales of books, Kindles and whatever other adjacencies the Palin book might have help jumpstart retail in the Christmas season, which helps the economy, which helps the Democrats in 2010 and Obama in 2012. Make this thing a best-seller!
