Hey all, I keep forgetting to say, or at least to relentlessly remind you, that you should feel free to forward this to other people who might like it. Call it the LITC membership drive if you will.
Pick of the week
I'm going to go with Vaughan's Open Jam alumni Your Little Pony and The Changes at Lakeview Links on Wednesday, as well as a general recommendation to go out and see something on Friday night. There's just way too much good stuff going on to even choose just one, although I'll probably end up at Elbo Room for EXO.
Recap
In retrospect, it's a good thing I didn't pick Filter as the "must-see" show for last week, because frontman Richard Patrick checked himself into rehab earlier in the week and cancelled the tour, which was ironically being sponsored by Miller Beer. I was a big honkin' wimp last week and didn't see anything, although I was out of town for a day and a half and had a gig on Saturday, so I have at least some excuse. And I was late in trying to find someone to check out Lewis Black with me, as comedy isn't as conducive to flying solo as music is.
10.07 monday
Scott Henderson Trio (Martyr's)
If you can tear yourself away from the Bears-Packers game, this will be worth checking out. Fusion guitarist Henderson has been showing off a more bluesy side as of late, influenced by legends such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck, and while I haven't actually heard any of the newer material, the guy can PLAY. It's an early show.
10.08 tuesday
Open Mike (Vaughan's) SEE COZ LIVE!
Last week was a three-song homage to Peter Gabriel, but I'm thinking I've been neglecting silly eighties songs lately. Come on down and sing along. Did I mention it's free, and microbrews are only $3?
Cher with Cyndi Lauper (United Center)
This is being billed as Cher's "Farewell Tour." Okay, bye.
10.09 wednesday
Your Little Pony with The Changes (Lakeview Links)
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. YLP are, for better or worse, Chicago's answer to Tenacious D, and well worth checking out.
10.10 thursday
Lyla Stone with Drive (Martyr's)
Since the last time I mentioned Lyla Stone, I still haven't actually heard them past that one soundcheck when Lindsie shared a bill at Schuba's, but that was good and one Mr. Kevin Holland swears by 'em.
10.11 friday
Bjorn Again (House of Blues)
This is still one of my favorite band names EVER, and warrants mentioning just on that account.
Lots of other stuff
There are too many good shows for me to just single out one or two here. We've got EXO at Elbo Room, e-mics at Gunther Murphy's, Missile at Lakeview Links, Hothouse Flowers at The Abbey, Liquid Soul at Joe's, and on the big stadium show front, No Doubt at the Allstate Arena.
10.12 saturday
Light FM with Ill Lit and David Singer (The Hideout) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Light FM boasts bassist and URT alumnus Chris Frantisak, as well as some inventive guitar playing and songwriting from Josiah Mazzaschi, who some may still remember from his previous band, Motorhome. Okay, so they may not "boast" about Chris, but they're glad to have him nonetheless.
Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire with Kevin O'Donnell's Quality Six (Nevin's Live, Evanston)
For the most part, these two bands have many members in common, if I remember correctly. Both of them have an exuberance that goes past the "jump and verve jazz" label that sits on this multi-day festival at Nevin's.
10.13 sunday
F8 featuring Leif Garrett (Joe's)
Yes, Leif Garrett. I'm assuming it's THAT Leif Garrett. What other Leif Garrett could it possibly be?
