So, Tuesday wound up being sorta interesting. Went to see a friend do a solo acoustic set at some little Wrigleyville bar. The whole thing was running fantastically late, partially due to that inevitable decision at venues that don't feature a lot of music to wait until the Cubs game -- which went 13 innings -- ended.
As a result, I didn't get to stick around to hear my friend. But that's not the interesting part. This particular friend and I were both in the same band a couple of years ago. Two other former members of that band also stopped by, along with another person who was -- how shall we say -- close to the band. Of the five of us connected to said band, three of us either did not part ways with it on the best of terms, burned some related bridges since, or both.
So guess who shows up right as I'm leaving? I was already literally on my way out the door, so I didn't stick around to see if we got past the awkward moments and started planning a reunion like they always do on VH1.
I was laughing out loud the whole ride down to Vaughan's at the absurdity of it all. Tony then showed me the chord I couldn't figure out in "Ashes to Ashes," which made me very happy. G-sharp half-diminshed, I've got you beat! I also managed a passable, if somewhat rickety, version of Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain," and came to the conclusion that "Frame By Frame" from King Crimson is perhaps not appropriate for the solo acoustic treatment.
At the end of the night, Tony and I got berated by a young woman, who I actually know, who was very upset that we were ending on time instead of keeping the list open until she showed up really late.
Despite all of this, I still play with chick singers. Go figure.
