Uncanny Resemblance

Hot on the heels of last week's Garbage/Curve revelation, a friend who has followed my various comments here and there about the new wave of Britpop caught up with me on Saturday. He was lauding Kasabian, who I had heard, along with a band called Dogs Die In Hot Cars, who I hadn't. He said they sound like XTC, which is not a comparison one makes trivially.

Holy crap, was he right. I mean, this sounds close enough to Andy Partidge's voice that it coule be Andy trying to put one over on people by making them think it's someone else. The lyrics and the arrangements are in the ballpark as well. Wow. Good stuff so far.

This bolsters my longstanding argument that the two paths to a great band are doing something people have never heard before, or doing something everyone has heard, but doing it really, really well. Although you have to wonder at what point they get tired of fielding questions about how big of an influence XTC is on the band, don't you?

Comments

I got suspicious when I saw that Kasabian's next single is going to be called "The Governor Of Simpleton".

Of course, substitute "Kasabian" with "Dogs Die In Hot Cars"
