Britpopping Off

Okay, so I seem to have this increasing tendency to knock DeRogatis when he says silly things lately, but it's just so easy sometimes. From his sort of meta-review of recent Oasis and Gorillaz performances, or maybe his review of their meta-perormances, I'm not sure which:

New drummer Zak Starkey got to stretch out with some Keith Moon-style flailing at the end of "Mucky Fingers," but he was woefully under-utilized through the rest of the set.

Of course, Zak's primary role in Oasis is to bring his pedigree as Ringo Starr's son, providing one more link between the alleged "best British band since the Beatles" (ha! ack! harrumph! excuse me?) and the Beatles themselves.

Maybe I'm listening to too much Britpop these days, but if you find me a drummer in a prominent British pop band of the last, oh, twenty years who "stretches out," I'll give you a cookie. It's just not in the job description. Phil Selway of Radiohead might be an exception, but he tends to be really sneaky about it.
