list.in.to.chicago this week: 09.26.2005

I'm going to try to be brief, not that it ever really works. Also, I need to stop trying to sleep on airplanes. Time to dig out my old chiropractor's number.

Pick of the week
Gotta go with the Bob Mould shows Thursday and Friday at Metro, even more so since he's got a full band for once.

list.in.to.COZ
It's another mini-tour of Southport Avenue for Diver, with Cullen's on Friday and Blue Bayou on Saturday.

Recap
I posted a full review of U2 on notabbott.com, but the short version is that it seemed to take half the main set to really get going, and Larry Mullen, Jr. makes me look downright exuberant while I'm playing drums. The John Mayer Trio are basically doing what Nicholas Barron has been doing for about ten years now, but they're doing it very well. And Steve Jordan is a badass.

9.27   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
It's been something like three weeks since I sang a song in public. There's something wrong with that.

Doves with VHS or Beta (Riviera Theatre)
Slowbuilding Britpop band. Good songs, good texture.

Kick the Cat with The Renegades (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Both fusion bands will be celebrating a CD release.

9.28   wednesday
The Arcade Fire with Wolf Parade (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
Indie darlings back after Lollapalooza.

Missile with The Cells, The New Randys, The Wiitala Bros (Bottom Lounge)
You can sort of tell that this is the stretch run for the Lakeview club, as there seem to be a lot of the more popular bands who have graced their stage coming through starting this week.

9.29   thursday
Bob Mould Band with Uncut (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
Playing Husker Du songs with a band for the first time in a long time, and the new record is pretty strong, too.

Benefit for Riley Savage (Double Door)
I have no idea who Riley Savage is, or why he/she/they need a benefit, but there's a fair amount of talent lending themselves to the cause, including l.i.t.c. faves The Changes and Matt Hoffer with Larry Schroeder.

9.30   friday
Diver (Cullen's)   SEE COZ LIVE!
Our home away from home away from Vaughan's.

Bob Mould Band with Uncut (Metro)
Second show added. Too bad I've got a gig.

The Mars Volta with System of a Down (Allstate Arena)
It'll be interesting to see if the neo-psychedelic prog rock can work in this big of a room.

10.01   saturday
Diver (Blue Bayou)   SEE COZ LIVE!
Over to the west side of the street.

Light FM with The Assembly, Dialogue, Avagami (Bottom Lounge)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
A very rare appearance, given that their singer/guitarist/principal songwriter moved to California a few months ago.

10.02   sunday
Gigfest (Horseshoe)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Wingman bassist Randy Firfer is part of the braintrust behind this show, which includes one longtime friend of mine making her full band debut with the band Solstice.

Trapt with Blindside, Aphasia (House of Blues)
This show is ostensibly sponsored by 94.7 The Zone, but word on the street is that the station has gone oldies to fill the void left when 104.3 went to the "Jack" format. So maybe Trapt will play only Captain and Tenille covers. That, I might pay to see.
