So, I had Anto and Tony over to do some low-impact recording on the new DAW rig, and as I should have expected, it didn't work. Or, rather, SONAR refused to even talk to the ONYX mixer. No audio in, no audio out. The mixer still worked as a mixer, but any back and forth with the computer just wasn't happening.
This is annoying for any number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that I know that I was able to send audio from the PC to the mixer in the past. More to the point, I could actually listen to projects I had recorded previously, and now I can't.
I don't have the foggiest idea what I might have done to change any configurations, but now it's dead. And it's not the interface itself, it's almost certainly SONAR that's the problem. Had I been a bit more persistent, I could have gotten Tracktion, the program that came with the mixer and the Firewire card, up and running, but that looks like one of those programs that's written for non-computer types, in that the interface looks completely unintuitive to me.
We ended up recording straight to a DAT, so now I'm figuring out Tracktion as I mix that down. Not quite as intimidating as it looked initially, but still really weird.
I have a hunch I know what the SONAR people, who got a somewhat frantic e-mail to tech support, are going to come back with (Upgrade to version 5! You'll love it! It's a way of life!). We'll see what happens.
