Keeping Tabs

Last week, The New York Times reported on guitar tablature websites being the next target of the music industry. On the one hand, this sucks, because, duh, I'm not so good of a guitarist that I can always figure stuff out, and some of the online tabs are pretty good.

On the other hand, last night I tried to find the chords for "I Don't Like Mondays" from The Boomtown Rats, and the degree to which the tabs I found were flat-out wrong was pretty astounding. So if music publishers have a beef with these sites, maybe it should be because they're misrepresenting their art.

If you came here searching for the tabs, start by putting a capo on the fourth fret. The basic intro is just Bm to C, without all the flourishes. The main verse figure is G Bm C D twice, then C C C D. I may be forgetting a series, but I'll check and add it later if I am. Chorus is G D/F# Em D -- which is the progression I'm finding everywhere now that I've learned it, then G D/F# C D. Bridge is Bm G Bm C D. The last chorus does the first half of the chorus twice, then the second half of the chorus twice, and the song ends with the verse chords.

It's pretty straightforward, and a fun song to play. A couple of us at Vaughan's are going with a "days of the week" theme tonight, so that was the impetus behind learning it.
