Okay, so I've been lax in my Supernova blogging. A not-so-quick recap is in order. First off, Ryan learned what worked for him a little too well. He kept ratcheting up the intensity until he just totally went off the deep end with that bottom three version of "Baba O'Reilly," which kinda sucked. And speaking of sucking in the bottom three, it's fascinating to see how Dilana's lack of experience with the concept has been contributing to her total undoing. She sounded like she just whimsically came up with the notion of doing "Psycho Killer," when the bottom three is really about nailing something to the wall, and she's paid for it two weeks running now, as she was about a half-bar behind the band through the whole first verse of "I Want You To Want Me."
So Ryan getting booted was no surprise. Neither was Storm, as much as I enjoyed watching her. She rode that idea of just being a really competent singer -- Dramarama tune notwithstanding -- for a bit too long, and would have looked weird in front of that band anyway, as much at T. Lee would have enjoyed looking at her ass every night. I thought the band all volunteering to play on her song was telling, and having seen The Panic Channel, I would not be surprised if she ends up replacing that band's singer halfway through the tour, because she can sing circles around him and has about ten times as much charisma.
Then there the originals. I find it interesting that at least three of them -- from Magni, Storm and Toby -- we better than anything Supernova has offered up on their own, but this may be the equivalent of having your whole life to come up with your first album, and two years for the next one. That said, Toby not only blew the roof off the joint, but he sounded really good in the brief glimpse we got of him writing with Gilby. On the other hand, both Lukas and Dilana crashed hard during that bit, which I think has hurt their chances severely. Dilana's antic have thrown another wrench in her gears, so I wouldn't be surprised to see her the first of the final four to go away.
Lukas, who was an early front-runner, is now the long shot. He's got a voice you would be able to identify on the radio, and he's got his look. But there's an overarching sense of style over substance -- with both him and Dilana, now that we've seen them for a few months -- that will eliminate them from consideration in a good and just world.
Which leaves Magni and Toby. I think Magni is a better singer, but Toby is coming on strong, and he's already got the hit single. And it's night and day between these two and the other two, because neither Dilana nor Lukas seem to have any sense of humor whatsoever. On the other hand, Magni is funny, and Toby is fun, which is a subtle but clear difference. I would also like to point out that Toby was the only one of the five remaining singers last Tuesday who sounded like an actual rock star in his between-song banter, so I'm going to give him the nod going into the final round.
