Here's a quick and somewhat belated roundup of Rock Star: Supernova post-mortems and other news tidbits.
- On the day of the season finale, a judge ruled that the band couldn't actually call itself Supernova. The episode studiously avoided the name for the band, but still referred to the television show as Rock Star: Supernova, which seems like an obvious legal loophole. Apparently, it's so obvious that the band is now calling itself Rock Star Supernova. No word as to whether or not Mark Burnett will now sue. The cool thing is that I could find out if I wanted to.
- The staff of allmusic.com weighed in on the season, and Heather Phares summed up my overall feeling about winner Lukas Rossi, saying he "would update the band's look just enough and not interfere too much with the creative process behind it." Take it or leave it, I think his voice was one of the most distinctive on the show, and will be immediately recognizable on whatever's left of radio these days.
- Of course, there's been considerable criticism of the band's new material, and the Rock Star track record is suddenly not looking so good. I will say that the ballad got stuck in my head last week a full couple of days after watching the show.
- Speaking of that tune, I think Magni playing acoustic as the credits rolled was telling. First off, the "rationale" for his exit from the competition was that he was more of a band member than a frontman. Second, he played guitar on a lot of songs towards the end of the season. So I would be in no way surprised if he ended up touring with the band as a rhythm guitarist.
- Apparently, Storm is already in the studio with Dave Navarro recording her original from the show, and it's slated to hit iTunes within a month. I'm sticking with my prediction that she ends up fronting The Panic Channel before the Rock Star tour ends, although Magni could also get that nod, particularly if he's out on the road with that particular circus. And I suspect Toby's single will chart higher than anyone else's associated with the program, if and when it comes out.
