list.in.to.chicago this week: 09.03.2007

Yes, I realize this is going out too late on Monday for you to do anything about it, but it's the end of the holiday weekend and you probably weren't going out anyway. Plus, the Schubas show is a month-long residency, so you'll have more chances for that one.

Pick of the week
Lots of stuff to choose from this week. The Hideout Block Party (Friday, Saturday) is a solid enough lineup that I'm somewhat saddened that I'm going to miss it for a private Diver gig on Friday and USA-Brazil soccer on Saturday. The potential sleeper pick is Louis XIV at Beat Kitchen on Thursday, and you should bust out your most ironic t-shirt for Harvey Sid Fisher at Ronny's on Friday, because I don't think anyone would go to that show earnestly.

Nothing doing this week, maybe not even Vaughan's. If you need a fix, I've got some songs on some myspace pages and shit.

Recap
Not much to report this week. I felt like my timekeeping was a little suspect at Saturday's Diver show, but I'm resolved to start practicing again, so hopefully that will be a short-term problem. I wouldn't say it's a report from a l.i.t.c. operative, but a colleague gave a thumbs up to the Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood set on Friday night.

9.03   monday
May Or May Not with The Swimmers, John Roeser Avenue (Schubas)
Another month, another Monday night residency, which means this time that the rehearsal building might be one band quieter on Monday nights. And I knew a John Roeser in high school, but he wasn't the sort to be playing at Schubas on a Monday night in September.

Bobby Albright (Hideout)
Featuring Marvin Tate, who -- if you're as old as I am -- you may remember from D-Settlement and then Uptighty before that.

9.04   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS! MAYBE!
I may have other plans this week, which means it's going to be Tony hosting all by himself, so come and keep him company.

9.05   wednesday
Tributosaurus   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This month, John Lennon.

9.06   thursday
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals with Piers Faccini (Chicago Theatre)
I haven't checked out the new record yet, but I'm still back on a bit of a Ben Harper kick since seeing him again at Bonnaroo. For those of you who remember the list from two weeks ago, I first saw Ben Harper on that same stage in Austin that I saw Cracker on. I think. I might have seen him twice at SXSW that year, and I don't remember which show was first.

Jason Seed Elixir Ensemble with Last Place You Look, Jauqo III-X, Marking Twain (Elbo Room)
I think this is my friend Scott's old roommate, which could make this interesting, as I remember bonding with him at the Banned From Utopia show at Cubby Bear, oh, about ten years ago.

Louis XIV with The Ladies and Gentlemen (Beat Kitchen)
I'll go out on a limb and say that the second best thing about the new Flash Gordon series on the Sci-Fi Channel is that Louis XIV got to remake the Queen theme from the 1980 movie. The best thing, of course, is that it spurred Universal to re-release said movie on DVD.

Black Moth Super Rainbow with Plastic Crimewave Sound, Tirra Lirra (Abbey Pub)
I would have guessed that they were from Japan, and not Pennsylvania, with that name, but no matter where they're from, you can see them headline on their own before they open for the Flaming Lips on Friday. So that's a perfect chance to cozy up to them and see if they can score you comps for the sold-out Friday affair.

Macy Gray with The Brand New Heavies (House of Blues)
Just watched her PBS Soundstage show from this past season. Not bad, but not great.

9.07   friday
Hideout Block Party (Hideout)
In one of the most appropriate bookings ever, tonight's headliner at the annual festival on Wabansia is Bloc Party. Also appearing tonight are The Changes (Friends of Coz!) and the 1900s.

Harvey Sid Fisher with Miracles of God, Roomate (Ronny's)
As far as I can tell, this is the weird guy that the Craig Kilborn-era Daily Show used to show clips of singing fairly ridiculous songs about Zodiac signs, and not a band ironically named after him. His site is listing a "Midwest Zodiac Tour," so I guess it's legit. Legit? Le-why? Free shout-out next week to anyone who can place that movie reference at the end there.

The Flaming Lips with Black Moth Super Rainbow (Aragon Ballroom)   SOLD OUT!
I've only seen the Lips outdoors in the last two years, so I'm curious as to how well their elaborate stage show will work with, you know, walls and a ceiling.

David Bazan with Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Gaberdine (Beat Kitchen)
I thought Bazan's name looked familiar, and it turns out he was the principal behind Pedro the Lion, so apparently I had confused him with someone I had actually heard of. Maybe one of the guys in The Hooters.

9.08   saturday
Hideout Block Party (Hideout)
The full day of music features Mucca Pazza, Art Brut, The Frames and Andrew Bird.

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine with Cash'd Out (House of Blues)   SOLD OUT!
It's a novelty act, but it's a pretty good one. I first came across Cheese by way of the remake of Dawn of the Dead, which featured a lounge version of "Down With The Sickness" from Disturbed.

Rush (First Midwest Bank Ampitheatre)
I normally don't touch the shed shows, but I finally watched the venerable Canadian trio's 30th Anniversary Tour concert in HD that I had on my DVR over the weekend, and was totally geeking out on it. I also very much noticed the homages to Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Max Roach in Neil Peart's drum solo, which may have been totally lost on me back during my serious Rush phase, except that I think most of that entered Peart's solo after I had already graduated from college.

The Starfuckers with The Sleepers (Double Door)
So Gilby Clark would rather tour 400-capacity venues with the drummer from The Stray Cats than perpetrate the train wreck that was Rock Star Supernova? Like nobody saw that coming.

9.09   sunday
Nicholas Barron's Hyperactive (Long Room)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I figure Steve's fifty-fifty for making this gig if the SSL shows up this week. That will make sense to exactly five people on this list. Maybe six.
