So, let me get this straight. You can pre-pay for a download of the new Radiohead album? What, in case they run out? Isn't that like ordering appetizers for delivery?
Pick of the week
That Roy Haynes show on Friday at Symphony Centre looks awfully appealing, as do The Klaxons on Saturday night at The Vic.
list.in.to.COZ
Nothing but Vaughan's until the end of the month.
Recap
Another show in Palos Heights, another crazy blond woman. I gave her a drumstick, if you know what I mean. And if you don't, I mean that I gave her a drumstick out of my stick bag, you pervert. If I did anything else last week, I don't remember.
10.01 monday
Down The Line with Joshua James, Brendan Losch (Schubas) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Another month, another residency, this time from the tireless acoustic pop quartet. Maybe not entirely acoustic, but there's certainly an acoustic vibe I get from them.
10.02 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
With three dates at the United Center this week, I will maybe buy a drink for anyone who comes in and plays a Genesis tune. I'll definitely buy you a drink if you play a Peter Gabriel-era Genesis tune.
Maroon 5 with The Hives (Allstate Arena)
There was a deafening amount of hype for the latest record from these guys, and from what I can tell, that record pretty emphatically didn't live up to it. But it's entirely likely that I'm misreading the mainstream simply by not really paying much attention to it.
Paolo Nutini with Scott Matthews, Serena Ryder (The Vic)
Which, of course, is why Paolo Nutini barely registers on my "why should I know who this guy is" meter. And if he hadn't played Lollapalooza, I still wouldn't know who he is.
Genesis (United Center) SOLD OUT!
On the one hand, Invisible Touch was a load of crappy pop fluff that clearly marked the end of this once proud band's relevance, but on the other, it still had two or three redeeming songs on it. If you haven't heard Disturbed cover "Land of Confusion," you should go check it out.
10.03 wednesday
Genesis (United Center) SOLD OUT!
With this second show falling on the first Wednesday of the month, I would like to take this moment to fondly remember Dan Leali and Jeff Quay recreating the Phil Collins/Chester Thompson drum duet with Tributosaurus a while back. That was freakin' sweet.
10.04 thursday
Hot Hot Heat with Bedouin Soundclash, De Novo Dahl (The Vic)
If I were a tour promoter, I'd pair Hot Hot Heat with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and !!!, which would make it "Hot Yeah! Hot Yeah! Heat Yeah!" I clearly have too much free time on my hands.
Voxtrot with The Little Ones, Sleeping States (Metro)
Apparently, they pleasantly surprised Chicagoist at Pitchfork. And Chicagoist is subsequently giving away tickets.
Imperial Teen with Bang! Bang!, Canasta (Abbey Pub)
I think this band has probably progressed past being Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum's other project by this point.
Genesis (United Center)
The third and final show is not sold out, which make me think that adding a superfluous extra date to these big tours may be the easiest way to combat ticket scalping, if the extra date doesn't cost too much, incrementally, to do. Might hurt the ego a bit, but if South Park taught us anything, it's that Phil Collins needs his ego hurt.
10.05 friday
Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth with Stefon Harris (Symphony Centre)
With the passing of Max Roach, I'm pretty sure Haynes is the only be-bop era drummer of any great stature still alive. I saw him some ten years ago with Chick Corea and he was a joy to watch.
Live with Collective Soul, Emerson Hart (Congress Theatre)
I think I used the "I Alone" joke about the estimated size of their remaining fan base last time, didn't I?
Bad Religion with Gallows, The Briggs (House of Blues)
My friend Nick will probably kill me for this, but I always get Bad Religion and Social Distortion confused. I think one of them is highly regarded and one of them not, and I think Social Distortion is the highly-regarded one.
Phil Lesh and Friends (Riviera Theatre)
I swear, every time I drive by the Riv, the marquee is either touting Phil Lesh or Bob Weir. It's getting downright eerie.
The Sea And Cake with Meg Baird, David Daniell and Douglas McCombs (Metro)
I think I've always wanted to lump this band in with labelmates Tortoise, but the truth is that there's much more of an indie pop vibe to Archer Prewitt and company.
The Assembly with The Saps, The Its!, Jonny Rumble (Subterranean)
It's been a while since I saw anyone say much about this local band, but there was a bit of a buzz at one time.
Tribute To The Fall (Hideout)
A co-worker forwarded this one to me, so despite not being a big fan of The Fall, I thought I'd pass it along. With Plastic Crimewave Sound, Tight Phantomz, Fast Product, Sybris, The Thin Man, Grimble Grumble, Titmice, Vibe Central and others.
10.06 saturday
State and Madison with Last Fast Action, The Noise FM, Danger Is My Middle Name (Beat Kitchen)
That's State and Madison, on the corner of Belmont and Hoyne. Yes, it's zero north-south and zero east-west. Very clever.
Of Montreal with Grand Buffet, Mgmt. (Metro) SOLD OUT!
Seriously, the geographical band names HAVE TO STOP.
Dillinger Escape Plan with A Life Once Lost, Genghis Tron, Behold...The Arctopus (Subterranean)
A little too dissonant and noisy for my tastes, but you might like it.
Klaxons with Sh*tdisco (The Vic)
Probably the biggest "next big thing" from the UK since Amy Winehouse and Arctic Monkeys before her. It's going to be a tough call between the Fire game and this one.
Peven Everett with Room 11 (Morseland)
The former Swimmer secret weapon continues his burgeoning solo career, and I spelled "burgeoning" right on the first try!
Phil Lesh and Friends (Riviera Theatre)
See Friday's listing.
10.07 sunday
Tokyo Police Club with White Rabbits, The Virgins (Schubas) SOLD OUT!
I want to say I've listened to this recent buzz band, but it's not like it matters, because enough other people have that all the tickets are gone.
The Watson Twins with Ben Weaver, Twilight Revival (Empty Bottle)
I think maybe they miss working with Jenny Lewis, and are just following Rilo Kiley around the country a few weeks behind.
Of Montreal with Grand Buffet, Mgmt. (Metro) SOLD OUT!
See Saturday's listing.
