You Had Me At Cello

I just heard "I'm Not Jesus," ostensibly by the Finnish heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica, on the radio. I say ostensibly first, because I can, and second, because I know this song from it's original incarnation, which was a new project driven primarily by Geno Lenardo, formerly of Filter. This was back in 2003, I think.

A bit of digging shows that Lenardo and Johnny Andrews -- who was the singer and co-writer for that new project when I helped them out as a drum tech for some showcases -- do, in fact, get songwriting credit on the tune. I'm a little surprised that Steve Gillis didn't get a piece of the songwriting, but drummers rarely do.

Last I heard, Geno still had an iron in the fire with this band, but the personnel had changed significantly. I want to say Chad Taylor of Stone Sour, who sings on the Apocolyptica version, was part of it at some point, but I haven't talked Geno in probably a year, so I don't know.

Anyway, congrats to Johnny and Geno, who should get some return on a lot of work they put into that project and those songs if this breaks out into a hit.

Comments

Hey there,
Just came across this article via a google alert for Geno Lenardo whose work I am huge fan of. I recently posted a comment to Richard Patrick via his MySpace site wondering if he and Geno are back collaborating on the new upcoming Filter album after his work in Army of Anyone... His reply didn't mention any clues. Alas, however further info garnered from a recent interview relates that the new songs were written with
" former Limp Bizkit guitarist and current Black Light Burns frontman Wes Borland, John 5 of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie fame, and prolific drummer Josh Freese, most recently connected to Patrick's former band Nine Inch Nails. Longtime collaborator Rae DiLeo also contributed to the Josh Abraham-produced effort..."

So to my query: Just wondering if you have any insights into this and whether Geno indicated that he will no longer be part of Filter... which is a shame. I am a fan of both musicians and feel sad that they don't seem to be working together anymore...
Thanks for your time,
Milo

I know just as much as you do on the new Filter record -- been meaning to ask Steve about it, but I haven't seen him since that news broke. If I go to his regular gig on Sunday, I'll ask.
