If I were to set up a Twitter feed for Lollapalooza, would any of you care? Let me know via e-mail or in the comments.
Pick of the week
Well, I'm obviously going to Lollapalooza, so keep an eye out and say hi.
list.in.to.COZ
Just Vaughan's this week, but you should totally come out to Vaughan's so we don't get fired.
Recap
I did make it Elbo Room on Saturday. Soma Star brought the rock, as usual, and at some point when I kept missing all those shows in the past six months, Kevin started wearing sleeves on stage. Patrick inadvertently tried to compensate, while Dario eschewed the shirt altogether. He just needed a pair of Union Jack shorts and he'd be all set. Lisa and Bill didn't do anything for me to poke fun at.
Elsewhere on the bill, The Emerald Lizards had a refreshingly traditional balls-out rock sound from some guys who looked like they remembered Iggy and the MC5 back the first time around. The Joans were too much schtick for my tastes, and the little I heard from The Debut was good, but their drummer just wasn't quite there.
7.28 monday
The Dials with Walking Bicycles, Aleks and The Drummer (Empty Bottle)
There's going to be a second annual EXO acoustic show next Sunday, and this show from the other band Doug Meis played in gives it a sense of a two-week celebration of the late drummer's life. Which is a nice sense to have.
7.29 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
Bonus points for playing songs from Lollapalooza artists, I guess.
Earth, Wind & Fire (Chicago Theatre)
The standard by which all other horn section bands are measured.
7.30 wednesday
Last Band Standing (Double Door)
Two bands from this competition will get slots at Lollapalooza at times when hardly anyone will see them, but hey, they can say they played Lollapalooza. The contestents are Art Official, The Melismatics, Foxtail Somersault, .Sub, Lapdance.
Rancid with MxPx, Rule 22 (House of Blues)
While it would seem maybe this was an ill-advised booking with Lolla around the corner, the Warped Tour is out in Tinley Park this weekend, so this might be a good pre-festival show for that. Heck, it might even be on purpose.
7.31 thursday
Rancid with H20, The House That Gloria Vanderbilt (House of Blues)
See Wednesday's listing. And get a good night's sleep.
8.01 friday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park)
The rough itinerary for me is going to be Rogue Wave, Yeasayer, Louis XIV, The Black Keys, Cat Power, Bloc Party, Radiohead.
Gogol Bordello (Metro)
The gypsy punk band tears the roof off of the Wrigleyville venue in their Lolla aftershow.
Mates of State with MGMT (Double Door)
I'm not a huge fan of Mates of State, but I've been intrigued by what I've heard from MGMT, and will be checking them out in Grant Park.
8.02 saturday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park)
Today's ideal itinerary goes something like Does It Offend You, Yeah?, The Gutter Twins, MGMT, Battles, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Rage Against The Machine.
Bloc Party with CSS, Does It Offend You, Yeah? (House of Blues)
Battles with Foals, Magic Wands (Double Door)
Broken Social Scene with Foals, Magic Wands (Metro)
Tonight's Lolla aftershows, brought to you by the letter "B". The two bands I'd be interested in catching because I probably won't see them at Lollapalooza are CSS and Broken Social Scene. Not that I have the stamina to spend all day in Grant Park and then go see more music at night, but if I did...
Flogging Molly with Smoking Popes, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (Congress Theater)
Probably the biggest -- and hardest to get to -- afterparty of the bunch.
This Must Be The Band with Smooth Move (Martyrs')
There seems to be a big difference between local/regional tribute bands and those with more of a national profile. This is the latter, for Talking Heads, and I suspect it's going to be pretty good.
8.03 sunday
Lollapalooza (Grant Park)
I may not make it early enough to see Office, which leaves the day with Brazilian Girls, Saul Williams, Love and Rockets, The National and Nine Inch Nails. I'd love to see Mark Ronson, but he's at the same time as The National and on the other side of the park.
