Longtime readers may recall that book about online music that I used to always say I was going to write. I'm curious to see if it's actually been written. One of the bits that piqued my interest was this:
One of the first things the labels got wrong, Mr. Knopper says, was the elimination of the single. It got young people out of the habit of regularly visiting record stores and forced them to buy an entire CD to get the one song they craved. In the short term this was good business practice. In the long term it built up animosity. It was suicidal.
The fact that the review was critical of the access to important players and the writing style makes me think there may still be an opportunity to tell this story, although I don't know what the status is of Trib scribe Greg Kot's effort.
