If you had half as much fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day as Diver did on Saturday, then we had twice as much fun as you.

Pick of the week
I'm definitely intrigued by the Les Claypool show on Saturday at the Riv, but I'm not sure if I'm intrigued enough to actually go, except maybe to revise my lukewarm opinions of Saul Williams and Devotchka from last year's Lollapalooza. And if you get this in time, Flogging Molly at House of Blues tonight should be fun.

We're expecting lots of drunken revelry on Tuesday night at Vaughan's, so instead of the normal Open Jam, it'll just be an acoustic Diver show, starting around 7:30pm. After that, I've got absolutely nothing public on the books. Nada.

Recap
Speaking of drunken revelry, Fado was a good time on Saturday, once we knocked a bunch of drunk people out of the way while getting our gear to the stage. And we debuted three new songs in the set -- four if you consider that we played "Sex on Fire" twice for some reason. Other than that, I didn't do much.

3.16   monday
Langhorne Slim with Blind Pilot, Sam Lowry (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
Applying the normal rules of sold-out shows at Schubas from people I've never heard of, I can only surmise that Langhorne Slim is popular with the indie underground, since he doesn't seem to have any songs on schmaltzy TV melodramas.

Flogging Molly (House of Blues)
I was surprised to find out the Celtic punk ensemble had an extra show in advance of Tuesday's St. Patrick's Day festivities. I was more surprised to find that it wasn't sold out, so this is where you'll find me this evening.

3.17   tuesday
DIVER (Vaughan's)   SEE COZ LIVE!
In lieu of the normal open jam, and in observance of the holiday, we'll be doing full sets with the acoustic configuration of the band starting a bit earlier, around 7:30pm. Depending on who's around, it could devolve into open jamness later, but don't quote me on that.

Flogging Molly with The Aggrolites, Dub Trio (Congress Theater)   SOLD OUT!
As good an Irish-themed show as you're going to find on St. Patrick's Day. I like that we're the city that got them on the holiday itself.

Red Red Meat with Pillars and Tongues (Empty Bottle)
While I was never a fan of Tim Rutilli's quasi-experimental rock stylings, I know a lot of other people disagreed with me, so the band's return engagement is at least notable. I'll just never forgive them for one show at Cubby Bear many years ago where it seemed like they were playing a twin guitar lead with one guitar deliberately out of tune. It was painful.

3.18   wednesday
Born Ruffians with Tokyo Police Club, The Honorary Title (Metro)
My cousin's fiance told me about this band, and I think they were the ones he actually played for me a bit, which would make them another guy/girl-fronted indie rock band of mildly jangly-ness. Headliners Tokyo Police Club come across as a less melancholy Death Cab For Cutie.

Cut Copy with Matt and Kim (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
I'm pretty sure I gave this band a spin when everyone was fawning over their last record, and I'm pretty sure I didn't care for it. There's a certain noisy component to the sort of stuff a lot of Pitchfork-y reviewers like, and I just don't get it. I think that's what bugged me about these guys.

Red Red Meat with Richard Edwards and The Nukes (Empty Bottle)
See Tuesday's listing, with a different opening act.

3.19   thursday
Richard Marx (House of Blues)
Every once in a while, there's a show where I'd just love to be a fly on the wall to see who shows up. This is one of those shows.

3.20   friday
Blue Note Records' 70th Anniversary (Symphony Center)
The venerable jazz label celebrates, with Bill Charlap, Peter Bernstein, Ravi Coltrane, Lewis Nash, Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington and Steve Wilson. I'm not sure if it's a seven-piece band featuring these guys, or if each of them has a band. Probably the former.

Holding Mercury with Carbonfour, Archie Star, Cavalry (Metro)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
A pretty solid spot on a Friday night bill at Metro for Mr. Hoffer and his merry band of radio-friendly rockers.

3.21   saturday
Les Claypool with Devotchka, Saul Williams, Secret Chiefs 3 (Riviera Theatre)
The Primus bassist and lead singer has put together a pretty eclectic tour here, with the intense rap and spoken word of Trent Reznor protege Williams to the gypsy-tinged folk-rock of Devotchka. The Metromix listing didn't include the exceptionally weird Secret Chiefs 3, but I thought I still saw them on the print ad.

The Dials with Vee Dee, Daily Void, Krunchies (Empty Bottle)
As I said after I saw them a few weeks back, this band is pretty much everything you would want a female-fronted punk-pop band to be. They do what they do very well, if that's that sort of thing you like.

3.22   sunday
Primal Scream with Kuroma (House of Blues)
I only really came to this Britpop thing in the last five or six years, so I don't really have a full sense of the history of bands from the UK from the last two decades other than the ones we play in Diver. So I'm not nearly as excited about Primal Scream touring as others might be.
