Lollapalooza tickets go on sale tomorrow. I'm believing the rumors about Soundgarden, so I'll be taking a short break from actually working for a living again (full-time, anyway) to snag mine.
Pick of the week
That California Guitar Trio show up in Evanston on Friday looks really, really good. And I'll be at Spoon on Thursday at the Aragon.
list.in.to.COZ
I've got a percussion gig up in Barrington on Friday with Andy from The Good Mondays, but I have enough trouble getting you out to shows in the city, so I'm not going to push it too hard.
Recap
Inertia and some work to do at home beat out Mike Stern yesterday, and I feel sort of bad about that. Friday and Saturday gigs each had their moments.
3.29 monday
Booty Movement Coalition with Magazine Gap (Martyrs') FRIENDS OF COZ!
It's kind of like Sumo used to be, only on Mondays, with some different people, monthly instead of weekly, and above ground. Other than that, really similar. Although with an opening act on the bill, I'm not sure if I can make it now that I have to get up and go to work in the morning.
3.30 tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's) COZ SINGS!
Yeah, I'm going on and on about this whole "having a full-time job again" thing, aren't I? Which means it's time to play an acoustic version of "Working Man" from Rush. And "Bright Future In Sales." Any other suggestions?
3.31 wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub) COZ SINGS!
You know, that accordion player never did come back. Maybe this week?
4.01 thursday
Spoon with Deerhunter, Micachu and The Shapes (Aragon Ballroom)
Brit Daniels' quirky indie pop has taken a bit of a back seat to the massive textural mashups of bands like Animal Collective and then the dance-pop of Phoenix and their ilk, so I'm interested to see if he can reclaim his indie darling mantle. The new record is a good listen.
The Powwows with Tamara Bedricky (Uncommon Ground Devon) FRIENDS OF COZ!
I'm guessing it's an acoustic-ish gig from Lauretta, Tony and their drummer, whose name totally escapes me. Aside from the tunes, you get a particularly earnest yet bemused brand of banter from Lauretta between songs.
This Must Be The Band with B1g T1me (House of Blues Back Porch Stage) FRIENDS OF COZ!
Tributes to Talking Heads and Tom Waits downstairs at the River North venue.
4.02 friday
California Guitar Trio with Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo (SPACE, Evanston)
I've been a sucker for these guys ever since they formed sixty percent of the Robert Fripp String Quintet, but their own output can be pretty special. They're all veterans of Fripp's "Guitar Craft" method, but also have a bit more personality than the King Crimson legend.
Passion Pit with Mayer Hawthorne and The Count (Congress Theater) SOLD OUT!
Sort of proving my point earlier, these guys struck me as having a bit more in common with the aforementioned Animal Collective, and this show is sold out while Spoon isn't.
High on Fire with Priestess, Black Cobra, Bison B.C. (Lincoln Hall)
If there was ever a test of whether or not Lincoln Hall's soundproofing would be able to keep the venue from getting the noise complaints that Lounge Ax used to get in this neighborhood, this stoner rock band would be it.
Beach House with Bachelorette (Metro)
This band seemed to have a massive wave of buzz when their record came out, and at the time, it seemed like enough to pack a place like Metro. I want to say they reminded me of Fleet Foxes, or maybe even Okkervil River, in a sort of austere, lo-fi way, but I may be totally misremembering that. The point is, lots of people talking, you may want to check them out.
Flying Lotus with Kode 9, Yroc (Double Door)
Took me a while to remember why this name was familiar. This band is opening for Thom Yorke and Atoms For Peace in a couple of weeks.
4.03 saturday
Alejandro Escovedo with Megan McCormick (Old Town School of Folk Music) SOLD OUT!
The Texas singer/songwriter does love Chicago, and this should be a great venue for him. Not sure if it will be full band, or just him, another guitarist and the lovely Susan Voelz on violin.
Joanna Newsome with Robin Pecknold (The Vic) SOLD OUT!
Another new record that's been getting a huge amount of critical acclaim. I think a lot of that comes from the uniqueness of someone playing a harp and the notion that, from what I've read, the songs and styles are massively eclectic. I haven't heard it yet, though.
4.04 sunday
Cymbals Eat Guitars with Freelance Whales, Bear In Heaven (Schubas)
Pretty sure these guys played Pitchfork last year. The name certainly stands out. And it's Freelance Whales for the early show, and Bear in Heaven for the sold out late show.
Miike Snow with Delorean; Light Pollution (Metro)
The Monday show is sold out, but this one appears not to be. And I think his name is pronounced MEE-kah, but for whatever reason, I want it to be like you're just saying "Mike" but holding the "i" longer.
The Watson Twins (Old Town School of Folk Music)
You may recall them from Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins.
