list.in.to.chicago this week: 04.19.2010

I haven't looked at the Reader online listings lately, and certainly not since they overhauled their music section in the print version, so this week I'm going to try using them as my source instead of Metromix. You'll let me know if I miss something obvious, right? Other than what I normally miss/ignore because I'm not interested?

Out of the gate, the "previous day/next day" navigation is a bit problematic. And I get a lot of server errors, which is a contributing factor to publishing late. Again.

Pick of the week
If it's any indication, I'll be at the White Rabbits show on Sunday night. Other than that, free Raveonettes on Thursday at Cubby Bear, Scotch Plains, New Jersey's favorite son Pat DiNizio at Temple Bar on Thursday as well, and former Smashing Pumpkin bassist Melissa Auf der Maur Saturday at Beat Kitchen (if she can get out of Europe) all look promising.

Some of you may have been wondering what's been going on with the rock juggernaut that is Andrew Fraker & Sons. Well, wonder no longer. We're playing this Friday at Enclave, a joint so classy they apparently frown on baseball caps and flip-flops. No, I'm not making that up. Regardless of your choice of footwear, it's FREE if you mention our name at the door.

Aside from that, regular office hours Tuesday at Vaughan's (for real this time) and Wednesday at The Globe.

Recap
Still basking in the glow of that Atoms For Peace show from last time. I may actually upload pictures to Facebook sometime this week.

4.19   monday
Hot Chip with The xx (Riviera Theatre)
If you just jumped on the electropop movement with Phoenix last year, this band was probably their immediate predecessor in the genre, at least as far as semi-mainstream success goes. And I have to figure The xx are going to know Chicago really well soon, as they were just here on their own, and are playing Lollapalooza in August.

Ben Folds with Kate Miller-Heidke (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
I haven't been keeping tabs on the post-alternative piano man, but his output has been consistently quirky, so I feel like he's a known quantity. Then again, he may be quirky to throw a bigger curveball than, say, the Fear of Pop record of the Shatner collaboration, which were both pretty great.

Trevor Reusch with The LakeShore Band, Kites, Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard (Elbo Room)
Lelia Broussard is asking to be my friend on Facebook, so if any of you were out and about and made it over to Elbo Room, let me know if I should confirm her.

4.20   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Okay, so I suppose there's really only one theme for 4/20, right? The obvious choices are "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Burn One Down," but bonus points if you play "Because I Got High."

Ben Folds with Kate Miller-Heidke (The Vic)
See Monday's listing. This is the only show of the three that's not sold out, as near as I can tell.

4.21   wednesday
Sing Along With Coz (The Globe Pub)   COZ SINGS!
The key to keeping up with my weekday music schedule now that I have a full-time job is the 20-minute power nap. It really works. Actually, it's 22 or 23 minutes, and I recommend setting a timer.

Charlotte Gainsbourg with AM (Park West)
The French actress and daughter of musician Serge Gainsbourg partnered with Beck for her latest album, and the reviews of that pairing have been generally pretty good.

Peven Everett with Silhouette Brown (The Shrine)
Way back when, Peven played trumpet and occasionally sang with Swimmer, but he's since become sort of a big deal in some circles, and if my memory serves, particularly in Europe.

Ben Folds with Kate Miller-Heidke (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
See Monday's listing.

4.22   thursday
Passion Pit with Smith Westerns (Congress Theater)
One of the slightly more interesting texture-heavy indie bands, to my ears, anyway. They were just here a month or so ago, but I guess maybe they had to come back this way.

Pat DiNizio Trio (Temple Bar)
The Smithereens frontman played at this bar back at New Year's when it was still Fearon's. Now they've renovated and renamed the place, and he's back.

Raveonettes (Cubby Bear)
This is a free show. That seems odd on any number of levels, but hey, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Corinne Bailey Rae with Daniel Merriweather (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
She's the soulful British singer who isn't a sixteen-year old blonde girl.

Antlers with Phantogram (Lincoln Hall)
I noted that this band was riding a bit of an indie buzz when they opened for Editors back in February, but apparently not enough of a buzz to sell out a headlining show.

4.23   friday
Andrew Fraker & Sons with Helicopters, Glittermouse, Jeremiah Higgins (Enclave)   SEE COZ LIVE!
We'll be headlining the Shoeshine Boy Productions 10th Anniversary at one of the non-traditional venues Paul has been been working with lately. New songs! Friends of Coz in Helicopters! FREE if and when you mention our name at the door!

Gogol Bordello, Devotchka, Jesse Malin & the St. Mark's Social (Congress Theater)
A very eclectic, ethnic bill over in Logan Square, with the New York-based gypsy punk collective headlining.

Mark Knopfler with Pieta Brown (Chicago Theatre)
We got to move these refridgerators, got to move these color TVs. The Dire Straits frontman has been pretty well-received as a solo artist, but I have to wonder if a reunion with his old band is inevitable. As near as I can tell, nobody in the band has died.

Airlines-X with 727 Generator (Transistor)
Saw this band opening for Tomorrow, The Moon, and they had a good retro-new wave energy on stage. No drummer, but a good energy.

Blane Fonda with Urbanites, Hudson Branch, Antennas Up (Beat Kitchen)
The band is celebrating its one-year anniversary, while Urbanites are releasing a record. And I'm going to keep confusing Hudson Branch with The Hudson Landing pretty much forever.

4.24   saturday
Melissa Auf der Maur with Panther Style (Beat Kitchen)
Last I saw, the former Smashing Pumpkins bassist was in Europe hitching rides because air travel is currently almost non-existent from the volcano in Iceland, so it's entirely possible she won't make it stateside by the weekend.

4.25   sunday
White Rabbits with Here We Go Magic, Pet Lions (Metro)
Had I written a top ten for last year, I'm pretty sure this Brooklyn six-piece would have been on it for their Britt Daniel-produced record. Not to be confused with Frightened Rabbit from Scotland, who just released a pretty good record in their own right.

Sia with Girl In A Coma (The Vic)
The Australian pop singer has garnered some pretty good reviews over the last couple of years, and put out a fairly well-regarded album last year. But if I listened to it, it didn't make much of a mark.
